2024 IRC, Significant Changes
Course Description:
This class reviews and analyzes selected significant changes from the 2021 IRC to the 2024 IRC. It familiarizes building officials, fire officials, plans examiners, inspectors and design professionals with many of the significant changes in the 2024 IRC. It assists code users in identifying the specific code changes that have occurred, and more importantly, understanding the reason behind the change. Changes to building, energy, mechanical, fuel gas, plumbing and electrical requirements are discussed. Finally, the seminar focuses on those code changes selected due to their frequency of application, special significance or change in application. This course uses the Significant Changes to the International Residential Code 2024 Edition as its basis.
Course Objectives:
The goal of Significant Changes to the International Residential Code® 2024 Edition is to familiarize building officials, fire officials, plans examiners, inspectors, design professionals, contractors, and others in the construction industry with many of the important changes in the 2024 International Residential Code® (IRC®). This class is designed to assist those code users in identifying the specific code changes that have occurred and understanding the reasons behind the change.
About the Instructor:
Rich Truitt currently serves as the Director (Building Official) for Harford County Government in Maryland. In this capacity, he oversees the administration and enforcement of building codes and licensing within the county, ensuring the safety and compliance of construction activities.
Rich began his career as a code professional in 1994. Over the years, he has held several key positions with Harford County, including Plans Reviewer, Chief Building Inspector, and Deputy Director (Deputy Building Official). Each of these roles has contributed to his comprehensive understanding of building codes and regulatory processes.
Throughout his professional journey, Rich has actively contributed to the advancement of the code profession through his service on various boards and committees. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Maryland Building Official Association (MBOA) in multiple capacities, including Director at Large, Secretary, Vice President, and President. In addition, he has held the position of Sectional E Director with the International Code Council (ICC) and is a past member of the ICC-Evaluation Service (ES) Board of Managers.
Currently, Rich serves as Chair of the Professional Development Council and is a member of the IECC Residential Consensus Committee.
Since 2007, Rich has been a contract instructor and subject matter expert for the ICC. In this role, he has provided instruction and engaged with code professionals across the United States, sharing his knowledge and expertise. Rich holds 15 International Code Council Certifications and is recognized as an ICC Authorized Instructor, Certified Maryland Building Inspector, Maryland Licensed Mechanical Inspector.
